Camera and microphone problems

Video calls

When you open a call, your browser asks to use your camera and microphone. Allow both. If something goes wrong, the Join Call screen says what, with a Try again button, and this article says what to do about it.

What each message means

Camera and microphone access was denied: your browser is blocking them. Open the site's settings, usually from the icon beside the address, allow the camera and microphone, then press Try again.

Camera or microphone is in use by another application. Close any other program or tab using them, such as another video call, then press Try again.

No camera or microphone found. Please connect a device and try again. Plug one in, then press Try again.

No camera detected. You can still call with audio only. or No microphone detected. You can still call with video only. One of the two is missing, and you can go in with the other.

Your camera does not support the requested settings. Press Try again. If it happens again, connect a different camera, or try another browser.

Something went wrong accessing your devices. Press Try again. If it keeps happening, reload the page or restart your browser.

You can still enter the call without a camera or microphone.

In the mobile app

If you use our mobile app, it asks for the camera and microphone the first time. If you said no, allow them in your phone's settings, under the app's permissions, and open the call again.

Choosing a camera or microphone

Before you go in, choose from the lists under the preview. They appear when you have more than one.

During a call, open Settings: Audio for the microphone, Video for the camera.

Connect headphones or a camera before you open the call. If you plug one in during a call, reload the page to see it in the lists.

Nobody can hear you, or you cannot hear them

Look at the microphone button: if it is red with a line through it, you are muted, and pressing it unmutes you.

Check that Settings → Audio uses the microphone you are speaking into.

Sound comes out of your device's default speaker or headphones, so check your device's sound settings and volume.

If there is still nothing, hang up and press Enter Call again.
